obligatory Half-Blood Prince review

I'm cutting this just in case I'm not the last person in the world to see this movie. Unlikely but still.
My favourite so far. Yeah it wasn't the book but they did an amazing job of telling the story in the 2.5 hours they had and god if it wasn't FUNNY. Daniel and Rupert had me loling at numerous points - especially Dan. And just...god generally it was funny.
Things I liked:
- Luna. Every time she was on screen I had to resist the urge to thrash and flail about in my seat because holy crap Evanna Lynch is AWESOME. Mum reckons she deserves an Emmy XD
- Tom Riddle was creeptastical omfg. Brilliant casting.
- And speaking of creepy schoolboys...Tom Felton I bow down to you. He hasn't had much of a part in the past few movies but he totally owned his scenes in this. What a champion.
- Alan Rickman OWNED. His best performance as Snape in the series yet. Totally bloody brilliant.
- Helena Bonham Carter rocked the house. I actually squeed a little at her crazy!happy!dance when she set Hagrid's hut on fire. She's utterly fab as Bellatrix, so crazy!evil.
- Jim Broadbent was perfect as Slughorn and such a pleasure to watch.
- Ron and Harry talking about girls skin of all things. *sporfle* oh boys...never change!
- Seamus blowing himself up just like the old days! Also, Neville didn't have a lot to do but Matthew Lewis did what little he had very well.
- Emma Watson. She has toned down her acting a lot in this movie, become more subtle and because of that she has become an all round better actress. Double thumbs up to her. Loved her frazzled hair look in potions too XD very cute!
- Harry and Hermione. Just...look I know they're not a canon couple or anything and they never will be (please don't flame me R/Hr fans! I know, I know, I'm a heretic) but god they're just beautiful together. I adore their friendship on every single level. Dan and Emma did a gorgeous job. Loved every single one of their scenes. Also I love how they've sort of set their relationship up for the final movies as well because that close bond they share only intensifies in the next book. God, just LOVE. Love love love. And more love.
- The bloke who played McLaggen made me lol. What a tosser! Such a poser. VERY funny. And I totally sporfled when he puked all over Snape's shoes XD
Things I didn't like so much:
- Michael Gambon as Dumbledore. Never have, never will. Sorry.
- the whole Tonks/Remus set up. Or lack thereof. Even in the BOOK that pairing was random - seriously. Also, her calling Remus "sweetheart"? Blair I hope you haven't seen this movie yet because I think you might want to bring yourself a bucket.
- I will admit that I didn't mind the Harry/Ginny. Bonnie and Dan have nice chemistry but it still creeps me out a little with the whole "I'm in love with someone who looks like my mother!" thing.
- The dude sitting next to me making stupid comments. At the end he asked his wife where the Ron/Hermione kiss was and I was just thinking god, have you even read the effing books? That happens in the last one. Far out!
- Random!Fawkes at the end along with the gratuitous Trio!shot. Egh. It's getting old.
Things that made me cry:
- The Burrow getting flamethrowered. Mainly due to Molly standing there staring at it and crying. Oh Molly...I just wanted to hug her.
- watching Bellatrix smash up the Great Hall and then that shot of it in the morning with the light coming in through the broken windows. That really, really upset me, seeing Hogwarts like that ;_;
Things that should've made me cry (but didn't):
- Dumbledore's death. Michael Gambon did a good job of his final line though. But honestly, I got more weepy watching Harry in Dumbledore's office afterwards than when Dumbledore actually died.
So all in all - lots of things to like! Definitely my fave so far.
On the way home mum and I deconstructed the film and the acting and my mum blatantly compared it to the LotR trilogy and said that the Harry Potter movies are so successful not because of the quality of the acting (not in all cases! please don't throw things at me! there are lots of good actors in HP but there are also quite a few mediocre ones too!) but because of the love for the books. Bwah. In contrast, she was full of praise for the LotR trilogy and all of the actors from it which made me squee a little.
Ah, my mother...a closet geek!

Date: 2009-07-21 09:18 am (UTC)YES! I'm probably biased because I'm obsessed with both Snape and Alan, but I thought he was absolutely amazing in this one.
And I always get shivers when I watch Helena as Bellatrix. She so completely captures the craziness. No one could have played Bellatrix better.

Date: 2009-07-21 12:33 pm (UTC)I've always disliked Snape - even after we found out he was a good bloke all along - but he's a fabulously complex character and Alan does such a brilliant job I can't help but fangirl him a bit ;)

- Seamus blowing himself up just like the old days!
I'd forgotten about that! But it was a great moment!
LUNA LOVE!

I felt the same after Cedric's death and you see the actual CEILING for once. There is no magical enchantment that shows the sky and it's just the medieval architecture. Whenever I see Hogwarts WITHOUT it's magic, it's so sad. Also, great uses of how a setting can reflect a mood.
