Their banter was normally light and quick but tonight it seemed to be lagging, due in no part to a sudden change in Claire’s manner. Charlie noticed of course and began to talk more and more until Claire was hardly saying anything and he was practically babbling to keep the conversation going.
‘Charlie?’ she said finally when she could no longer stand it. Charlie looked relieved.
‘Yes love?’
‘I need to talk to you about...something.’
Charlie gazed at her, waiting patiently.
Claire licked her lips and took one deep breath (and then another) before beginning.
‘I’ve been noticing certain…things lately.’ She glanced at Charlie who was still watching her carefully and looking thoroughly non-plussed.
‘What sort of things exactly?’
‘Just...little things,’ Claire said lamely. She cringed inwardly. She’d never been good with this sort of thing and god knows how Charlie would react to it. ‘I don’t know I just...I’ve been noticing things about the way you act around me.’
Charlie stared at her and Claire pushed on.
‘Look, Charlie I – I don’t want to offend you in any way so if I’m wrong please don’t be upset – and I mean, if I am right you don’t have to say anything if you don’t want me to know anyway...’ she trailed off and gazed entreatingly at Charlie who was now beginning to look slightly worried. Claire bit her lip and began to speak, quickly but falteringly as Charlie nodded along with her.
‘My last relationship was a bad one – really bad in fact…it really kind of rocked me about a bit – and the thing is that – and I don’t know if I’m misreading you here or what – but you seem to be working your way towards that kind of a relationship sometimes and I think you should know – even if you haven’t been thinking about it – I’m nowhere near ready for anything like that. Yet.’
Charlie blinked. He nodded. ‘Okay.’
Claire practically collapsed with relief. ‘You’re okay with that?’
Charlie leant forward a little and touched a hand gently on hers. ‘Claire, you’re my friend – the best friend I’ve ever had – and I absolutely love you to bits...’ Claire held her breath. ‘...I understand where you’re coming from and I promise I would never consciously do anything to make you uncomfortable so if I have seemed like I was angling for, you know, something more, then I apologise because that’s obviously not what you want.’
‘So you haven’t – I mean, you don’t want to...?’
‘You said I didn’t have to tell you if I didn’t want to,’ Charlie reminded her, trying to suppress a cheeky grin. ‘So I’m not going to. But if I ever do think about maybe going down that road with you, I’ll check in with you first. Okay?’
‘Okay,’
A relieved silence fell between the two of them but before long Claire felt her mouth twitching into a smile and she touched Charlie’s hand gently. He glanced down at it in some surprise and then up at her.
‘Thank you, Charlie,’ Claire murmured when their eyes met.
Charlie looked bemused. ‘What for?’
‘For listening to me,’ Claire explained. ‘It’s been a long time since anybody really listened to me.’
Charlie smiled. ‘I’m always here if you need somebody to listen – that’s what friends are for right?’
‘Yeah,’ Claire squeezed his hand and then let it go. ‘Thanks.’
‘In any case, I have a great amount of respect for you as a person,’ Charlie continued easily. ‘After all, you did give birth on an island in the middle of nowhere without an epidural. That’s pretty impressive.’
Claire burst out laughing. ‘Charlie!’
‘What?’ he said defensively. ‘I think that’s a pretty awesome achievement. It totally beats your previous record of surviving a plane crash at twelve months pregnant or whatever the hell you were...’
‘Eight months,’ Claire corrected him. ‘Humans are only pregnant for nine months you daft man.’
Charlie considered this for a moment and then grinned sheepishly. ‘Can you tell I didn’t pay attention in Human Biology?’
Claire smiled.

She wasn’t exactly sure what she was shouting as she dogged his footsteps, she only knew that she was angry and she had to vent her frustrations on him. He was the cause of them after all.
He continued to walk away from her, several paces more, but then quite suddenly he stopped, one hand raised to his eyes. She took the opportunity to storm up to him, her fists clenched. He swung around and glared at her and her stride slowed and stopped at the sight of his face, streaked with new tears.
‘Would you just stop, please?’ his face melted from a furious scowl into one of pleading persuasion. ‘I’m sorry! All right?’
‘Charlie...’ she began again, still angry although not as much as before.
‘No!’ he said forcefully. ‘I’ve had enough Claire! Yeah I screwed up, yeah I lied to you and I shouldn’t have but you don’t have to remind me of it every single day!’
Claire was silent.
Charlie stood there awkwardly, his hands held rather stiffly at his sides. He gestured weakly at her. ‘There’s something you should know about me Claire.’ He took a deep breath. ‘I’m not a strong person, I never have been.’ His voice was filled with a heavy bitterness. ‘I’m the sort of person who always looks for the easy way out – you know, the “painless alternative”. Then the one time I did try to be a hero I wound up dead…’
‘Dead?’ The word echoes hollowly between them.
‘That’s right,’ he’s still crying and he couldn’t make it stop even if he cared enough to want to. ‘I died Claire. Trying to save you.’
Her head feels like it’s full of helium all of a sudden. She remembers a lot more now and he’s talked of their abduction before but he’s never mentioned this. She thinks he may just be lying again but it certainly sounds like he’s telling the truth…
‘I’m not like Jack,’ Charlie continues miserably. ‘I’m not strong at all. I’m not like you...’
‘Me?’ this grabs her attention. She’s never even considered comparing herself to Jack before. ‘What do you mean me?’
He smiles then, a little shakily, but it’s definitely a smile. ‘Yes you.’ Under her incredulous stare he continues. ‘You’re the bravest person I’ve ever met. The stuff you’ve been through since we crashed here…’ his eyes go a little darker as his thoughts turn to his own personal ordeals, his own personal strength – or lack thereof. ‘I guess I’m a bit like one of those fish – you know the ones that latch onto the bellies of sharks and eat all the scraps that fall out of their mouths?’
Claire stares at him.
‘Well do you?’
‘Yes I do but-’
‘Well that’s me,’ he smiles sadly. ‘Isn’t it? I found you, a stronger person, and latched onto you.’
Claire stares at him a moment longer before replying. ‘Charlie, that is quite possibly the weirdest metaphor I’ve ever heard anyone use in my entire life.’
Charlie chuckles mirthlessly. ‘Well you know me. I’m always coming up with all sorts of weird shit aren’t I?’
Claire allows herself to smile at him and Charlie smiles back. His eyes are still sparkling with tears however and they both seem to realise at the same time that their argument has evolved into something close to their usual friendly banter.
Claire takes a sudden, small step backwards and this is more than enough for Charlie to realise that the moment is gone as well because he turns to walk away, then back again halfway.
‘Yell at me all you want,’ he says quietly. ‘But it won’t change what I did, and it wont fix anything.’
And without another word he walks away, leaving Claire staring after him.
Title: Endearments
Genre: angsty angst!
Rating: PG
Summary: “There’s something endearing about the way his eyes crinkle up at the corners when he smiles. And she hates it.”
Disclaimer: the angst doesn’t even belong to me anymore *pouts* stupid Lost people.
~*~
There’s something endearing about the way his eyes crinkle up at the corners when he smiles. Something adorable about his nose, so unlike anyone else’s she’s ever known, that she can’t help but smile – much like she does at the sight of his equally ridiculous and absurdly large ears. And then there’s that something about those curls at the nape of his neck that makes her want to run her fingers through them…
And she hates it.
She hates not being able to let him go, hates that he was the only one she trusted for so long only to have him hurt her in a way than Thomas never could have.
Because she let him.
She considers for a time the possibility that she’s destined to be alone, that her purpose now is to raise her son and not give a damn about anything or anyone else. But every time she tries to walk away from him, from everyone, he walks past her again and she remembers everything she wants to forget.
She still remembers the look in his eyes all the times he smiled at her and his eyes crinkled up at the corners. And she doesn’t think she’ll ever be able to forget that, no matter how hard she tries.
