I think in a lot of ways he regenerated at the best possible time. He was ready to go, had made his peace (as best as he could under circumstances) and it paved the way for him to start forgiving himself and living again. It's just a shame that reality had to come and kick him in the teeth when he lost Rose. I honestly think Ten would've been better off if she'd never left :(
