I think it's actually a really great ethical dillemma to explore. I mean, the Doctor effectively "creates" this sentient being with his own hopes, dreams and desires with full knowledge that he (and Rose) are going to effectively "kill" him in three months. Like John said to Martha in the episodes, "So it was your job to execute me?". It really raises some huge questions about whether it was right to even create him in the first place.

Doomsday in particular was very scarring for me. I bawled my eyes out ridiculously and still do when I watch it - it's such a brilliantly done scene and SO SAD. Plus I have a penchant for apparently doomed OTP's so to have ANOTHER ship ripped apart in front of me was nothing short of heartbreaking.
