Personally I'd blame RTD for scarring all the shippers in the fandom with Doomsday and then JE ;D

I do admit that your fear is not unfounded. I do love the angst! But keep in mind also that they're mid/late September now so time is running out for John anyway. The family will be landing soon and from there things get really exciting.
