The thing is, I know from personal experience that replacing someone you really love who's gone away (whether they've died or just moved far far away) doesn't work so I really wanted to bring that home in this. I actually feel a great sympathy for Desmond in this because he's just as confused by Claire's motives as she is - but he still wants to help her regardless.
